A 25-year-old man from Chandler, AZ is now facing child abuse charges for burning his 5-year-old son’s wrist and arms for touching a Bible.  According to Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo, the red blistering on the child’s wrist and hand were first noticed by the boy’s grandparents when they returned home from church services last Sunday.  Johnny Salazar, who lives at home with his parents, was watching after the boy and his 2-year-old brother at the time the incident occurred.

When Salazar’s parents returned from church services, they noticed red blistering on the wrist and arm of the 5-year-old.  They asked their son what happened and Salazar informed them he burned the child with a cigarette lighter, police said.

“The boy was touching his Bible and he thought the boy may be possessed,” Sgt. Favazzo commented.

Police added that the 5-year-old told his grandmother his father burned him for touching the Bible.

According to police reports, Salazar was talking gibberish about demons and possession at the time of his arrest.

The injuries were not serious enough to require medical attention, and Sgt. Favazzo informed reporters that the child and his brother are now in the custody of their mother, who lives in Casa Grande with her parents.
